Malta and Türkiye continued to strengthen cooperation in healthcare and innovation during a visit by a Turkish delegation led by Deputy Minister of Health Dr Şuayip Birinci.

The delegation held a bilateral meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Health Ian Borg, followed by visits to several healthcare facilities and entities, accompanied by Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing Deo Debattista. The discussions focused on digital transformation, healthcare infrastructure and community services.

Deputy Prime Minister Borg said that international cooperation allows Malta to learn from other countries’ experiences as it continues developing its healthcare sector.

He highlighted the importance of sharing knowledge, particularly as Malta prepares for future healthcare projects involving infrastructure and digital systems, with the aim of improving services for patients and supporting healthcare professionals.

The programme included visits to Mater Dei Hospital, Gozo General Hospital and the Ċensu Moran Regional Health Centre, where the delegation learned more about hospital services and community-based care.

Parliamentary Secretary Debattista said the meetings provided an opportunity to exchange experiences on the use of technology and bringing healthcare closer to people.

The delegation also visited the Malta Medicines Authority, COMED Therapeutics at the Malta Life Sciences Park and Torrent’s pharmaceutical plant in Ħal Far, gaining insight into Malta’s pharmaceutical sector, medicines regulation and innovative research.

Türkiye’s Ambassador to Malta, Barkın Kayaoğlu, said the two countries have areas where they can complement each other, with Türkiye sharing its experience in healthcare infrastructure and Malta offering opportunities through its connectivity and international links.
