Malta And Slovakia Seek Closer Cooperation On EU Priorities

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Chris Fearne, held talks with his Slovak counterpart, Juraj Blanár, aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and identifying areas for closer cooperation within the European Union.

The discussions focused on key challenges facing the EU, including the next Multiannual Financial Framework, migration and competitiveness. Both ministers highlighted the importance of ensuring that European policies remain practical, proportionate and responsive to the different realities of Member States.

Fearne said that while Malta and Slovakia have different national circumstances, both share an interest in an EU that listens to all its members and delivers practical solutions to common challenges.

The ministers also discussed the war in Ukraine and Europe’s wider security environment. Fearne stressed the need for a 360-degree approach to European security, addressing threats on the eastern flank while maintaining attention on stability in the Mediterranean, particularly Libya.

The meeting also marked the start of closer coordination ahead of the 2030 Council Presidency cycle, when Malta and Slovakia will form part of the same Trio Presidency with the Netherlands. Both sides agreed that early and regular coordination will be essential to an effective presidency.

The ministers further stressed the importance of maintaining the EU’s institutional balance and ensuring every Member State has an equal voice in European decision-making.

During the visit, Blanár also met President Myriam Spiteri Debono and Speaker Carmelo Abela.
