Malta & Poland Commit To Deeper Bilateral & European Cooperation

Minister for Foreign and European Affairs Chris Fearne met Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski in Warsaw, where both sides reaffirmed the strong relationship between Malta and Poland and highlighted the importance of continuing to strengthen cooperation across political, economic and European affairs.

During the meeting, the two Ministers discussed opportunities to further develop bilateral ties through increased trade and investment, technology, innovation, maritime services, education and wider institutional cooperation. They noted the potential to connect Poland’s growing industrial and technological sectors with Malta’s strengths in services, digital industries and the maritime economy.

The discussions also focused on the future of the European Union and the need for a Union that is effective, capable of taking action and responsive to current challenges, while ensuring that all Member States continue to have a meaningful role regardless of their size. The Ministers also exchanged views on future EU enlargement and the importance of maintaining equality between Member States.

Another key topic was the next Multiannual Financial Framework. Malta and Poland, both members of the Friends of Cohesion group, discussed the importance of addressing new European priorities while continuing to support cohesion, competitiveness, investment and sustainable economic development across the Union.

The Ministers also spoke about the wider European and regional situation, including developments in Ukraine and Libya. Malta highlighted the importance of a 360-degree European outlook that gives appropriate attention to both the eastern and southern neighbourhoods. The country stressed that developments in the Mediterranean remain closely linked to Europe’s wider security, economic resilience and prosperity.

Later, Minister Fearne attended official celebrations marking Malta Day and the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Malta and Poland. In his address, he reflected on the development of relations between the two countries over the past five and a half decades, highlighting growing connections in tourism, business and people-to-people links between Maltese and Polish communities.
