Malta And ESA Look To Expand Role In Europe’s Space Sector

Xjenza Malta, in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA), has held its fifth information day on the Plan for European Cooperating States (PECS), ahead of Malta’s fifth call for proposals, MT5.
The event, held at the Esplora Planetarium, brought together representatives from the private sector, research community and organisations interested in opportunities within the space industry.
Participants received practical guidance on preparing competitive proposals, while also meeting ESA representatives to discuss potential projects. The event included a session on how expertise and technologies developed outside the traditional space industry could be adapted for space-related applications.
Minister for Justice, Research and Innovation Clifton Grima said the government would continue supporting Malta’s development in the space sector, creating opportunities for local researchers, businesses and organisations.
Xjenza Malta CEO Silvio Scerri highlighted the importance of collaboration between research institutions and the private sector in helping Maltese organisations participate in the European space industry.
As of the first quarter of 2026, Malta had 12 active contracts under the PECS programme, covering areas including Earth observation, telecommunications, general technologies, education and science.
