Malta And Bulgaria Strengthen European Cooperation In Fisheries and Aquaculture

Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Animal Rights, Anton Refalo, together with the Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said, held a meeting with the Bulgarian Deputy Minister for Agriculture and Food, Stefan Burjev, during an official visit to Malta by a Bulgarian delegation.
The purpose of the Bulgarian delegation’s visit was to establish collaboration with Malta at a European level in the areas of fisheries and aquaculture. The Bulgarian administration regards Malta as a point of reference in these sectors.
During the meeting, various topics of mutual interest were discussed, particularly those relating to the fisheries and aquaculture sectors. The visit also highlighted the ongoing work by Malta’s national authorities in these fields, which continues to serve as an example to other EU Member States.
Minister Refalo and Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said outlined the Maltese Government’s efforts, which include legislative reforms, enhanced control procedures, infrastructure projects in fishing ports, maximised use of EU funds, investment in research, and the development of new markets for aquaculture.
They also explained the investments being made to improve services for local fishers, as well as the financial support schemes issued by the Government both during the COVID-19 pandemic and in response to the economic impact of the war in Ukraine on the fisheries sector.

Deputy Minister Burjev praised Malta’s achievements in these areas, and both countries agreed to strengthen cooperation at a European level. This includes joint efforts on controls and concrete actions against illegal fishing by third countries, tackling climate change challenges, and the need for generational renewal within the fisheries industry.
Minister Refalo stated, “This visit marks another important step in strengthening cooperation between Malta and other countries in this vital sector. It is also a clear confirmation of the Maltese Government’s commitment to ensuring that our fisheries and aquaculture are sustainable, modern, and resilient. The various projects being implemented place Malta as a success story and show how, through collaboration and vision, we can continue to improve this sector in line with the highest European standards for the benefit of our fishing communities and the protection of our marine environment.”
Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said added that the visit was highly significant and further reinforced cooperation between the two countries. “The Maltese Government remains committed to supporting local fishing communities, including at a European level. This meeting reflects our vision for a more resilient and sustainable fisheries sector.”

During the three-day visit, the Bulgarian delegation is scheduled to tour Aquatic Resources Malta, the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture, as well as several EU-funded projects related to fisheries and aquaculture.
