The Malta Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority (MCCAA) says that Malta is aiming to be one of the first countries to embrace and adopt digital standards at the 2026 World Standards Day event.

World Standards Day is an internationally recognised day dedicated to the contribution of standards to safety, trade and sustainability.

Held under the theme ‘Digitally Enhanced Standards: Shaping Tomorrow’, this year’s event brought together industry experts, regulators and academics to discuss how digital technology can improve standards and benefit businesses and consumers.

Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti addressed the event, stating that digital standards can simplify compliance, improve access to information, and strengthen consumer protection. Unlike traditional standards published in lengthy documents, digital standards allow users to search requirements more easily, access updates and integrate information into existing professional tools.

The event hosted representatives from European standards offices, including Dr Scott Steedman of the British Standards Institution and Christoph Winterhalter of the German Institute for Standardisation, alongside a panel of local regulatory and academic experts.
