Malta International Airport welcomed 1,109,789 passengers in September, closing off the peak summer season with a 12% increase in traffic compared to the same period last year.

The airport’s top five markets accounted for 63% of all passenger movements during the month.

The United Kingdom, Italy, Poland and Germany all recorded growth, while the French market experienced a 10.7% decline in passenger numbers.

September’s increase was supported by a rise of almost 16% in available seat capacity. Despite the growth in passenger numbers, the airport’s seat load factor recorded a slight decrease of three percentage points, averaging 87.7%.

As the aviation industry moves into the winter season, Malta International Airport has launched its winter flight schedule for 2026/27, maintaining connections to more than 80 airports across 31 markets.

The winter network will continue to provide links to key European destinations, with Southern Europe offering the largest number of connections and Western Europe having the widest airline presence.

The strategically important Scandinavian market will remain accessible through three airlines operating flights to Denmark and Sweden.

The winter schedule will also maintain links with airports in the Middle East and Africa. Malta International Airport said the continued connectivity reflects airline partners’ confidence in the Maltese Islands despite ongoing geopolitical and economic uncertainty.

While some routes have seen increases in frequency and others have been reduced, passenger traffic for the winter season is expected to remain broadly in line with the previous year.
