Malta Airport Foundation Unveils New Artwork At Kirkop Parish Church

The Malta Airport Foundation has completed a major artistic embellishment project at the Parish Church of Saint Leonard in Kirkop, unveiling new artwork in the church’s south transept dedicated to the Holy Crucifix.

Created by local artist Anthony Spagnol, the painting reflects two key themes from the life of Saint Leonard: his decision to become a deacon and his dedication to living a hermit’s sacred mission, performing acts of service and mercy. The artwork also features contemporary saints and blesseds, including Charles de Foucauld, Giovanni Durante, Enrique de Almozora, and Christian de Cherge, who similarly devoted their lives to helping others.

Spagnol carefully studied the work of renowned Maltese sacred artist Giuseppe Briffa, whose ceiling decorations date back to the 1960s, to ensure the new piece harmonises with the church’s existing décor while adding a contemporary touch.

The artwork was inaugurated on Wednesday and is now open for public viewing during the church’s regular hours.

Malta Airport Foundation Chairman Josef Formosa Gauci highlighted the foundation’s commitment to projects that celebrate Malta’s culture and identity while giving back to the community. “This project enriches both the building and the lives of those who visit, offering a space for reflection and spiritual growth,” he said.

For Kirkop parish priest Fr Martin Cardona, the new artwork strengthens the church’s role as the heart of the community and encourages parishioners to reflect on the virtues exemplified by Saint Leonard.

Founded in 2014, the Malta Airport Foundation invests in projects that support Malta’s artistic, architectural, and environmental heritage, helping to preserve and promote the island’s cultural legacy.
