Malta Advances Third Electricity Interconnector With Engineering Tender

Interconnect Malta has issued a tender for basic engineering of Malta’s third interconnector (IC3), following the energy vision “Malta’s Energy Shift: A Sustainable Power Transition“

The project will strengthen security of supply by diversifying connections and linking Malta to Italy’s grid at 380kV using HVDC technology.

Scalable from 200MW to 400MW, IC3 is included in the 2026 ENTSO-E Ten-Year Network Development Plan, supporting EU funding eligibility.

“The issuing of this tender marks a key step forward for Malta’s third electricity interconnector, launching the basic engineering phase that will guide the project’s design and permitting stages,” statedInġ. Ismail D’Amato, CEO of Interconnect Malta.

“The project will create a modern, flexible link starting at 200MW with the possibility to expand to 400MW, using the best available technologies and routes to ensure reliability and efficiency,” he concluded.
