Malta A Key Enabler In Europe’s Leadership In Semiconductor Space, Says PM
Prime Minister Robert Abela highlighted the importance of Malta’s contribution to the European Union’s semiconductor industry, stating that all Member States are essential for Europe to remain competitive in the global value chain.
He made these remarks while addressing the opening of the European Forum for Electronic Components and Systems (EFECS), held in Malta for the first time and organised by Malta Enterprise.
Abela emphasised that a competitive Europe requires all Member States, regardless of size, to participate in and benefit from the semiconductor value chain. He called for fair access to the European Competitiveness Fund to ensure balanced growth and technological resilience across the EU.
The Prime Minister noted Malta’s longstanding experience and ambition within the industry, highlighting a 50-year legacy anchored by STMicroelectronics.
The sector continues to contribute significantly to capital investment, high-quality employment, and export performance.
Malta is now moving up the value chain through higher-value, technology-driven activities that deliver long-term economic and social benefits, aligned with Malta Vision 2050.
Key elements of Malta’s strategy include the Malta Semiconductor Competence Centre, designed to strengthen local expertise, promote advanced manufacturing, and support innovation.
A semiconductor start-up incubator programme, developed with Silicon Catalyst, aims to nurture early-stage innovators and attract international talent.
The government is also developing a national Semiconductor Strategy in consultation with industry, academia, and international partners.
This strategy will define priorities, identify emerging opportunities, and consolidate Malta’s role within the European semiconductor value chain.
Minister Silvio Schembri added that Malta’s early investment in semiconductors demonstrates that even a small nation can play a meaningful role in Europe’s technological competitiveness, delivering new opportunities for its people.
