Major Upgrade Planned For Wied Iż-Żurrieq To Enhance Visitor Experience

The Public Works Department has announced that a permit has been issued for a major project aimed at upgrading and modernising facilities at Wied iż-Żurrieq, one of Malta’s most popular coastal destinations. Renowned for its scenic views and access to the Blue Grotto, the site attracts large numbers of visitors each year. The planned investment is intended to significantly improve the overall experience while strengthening safety and sustainability.
The project includes a series of infrastructural improvements designed to enhance existing services. Upgrades will be carried out to the ticket kiosk and facilities used by Blue Grotto boat tour operators, with the aim of making services more efficient and accessible, including for persons with disabilities. These improvements are expected to reduce waiting times and improve convenience for visitors.

Dedicated areas will also be created for divers, providing safer preparation spaces before entering the water. This will improve both accessibility and safety for those exploring the underwater environment in the area.
The needs of the boatmen and fishing community are also being addressed through the construction of new storage facilities for boats and equipment. These additions will help protect essential gear, particularly during periods of adverse weather.
A key element of the project is the redevelopment of the jetty, which will be redesigned to offer safer access for divers and swimmers, as well as improved mooring spaces for boats. New public sanitary facilities will also be installed to ensure adequate and accessible amenities for all visitors.
The works will follow a structured and methodical approach, with strict adherence to safety and quality standards. Environmentally compliant machinery will be used, and measures will be implemented to minimise impact on the surrounding ecosystem.
Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works Omar Farrugia said the project aims to deliver improved facilities for both workers and visitors. He noted that the works are expected to begin after the summer season and be completed in time for the following summer, ensuring minimal disruption.
The investment will complement ongoing projects in the area, further strengthening Wied iż-Żurrieq as a leading destination offering improved infrastructure, enhanced services, and a safer, more enjoyable experience for all.
