Rehabilitation works in Mġarr ix-Xini Valley, limits of Xewkija, have been completed following an intervention carried out over the summer.

The project covered approximately one kilometre, stretching from Triq tal-Gruwa to the existing dam, and aimed to improve rainwater management, reduce flood risks and protect the valley's natural environment.

During a visit to the site, Gozo Minister Clint Camilleri said the works would strengthen the valley's ability to collect and channel rainwater while safeguarding native vegetation, soil and biodiversity.

The intervention included the removal of vegetation across an area of approximately 11,700 square metres, alongside around 24,500 cubic metres of accumulated sediment and material.

Particular attention was also given to controlling invasive species, especially reeds, which can obstruct water flow and compete with native vegetation.

Their removal is expected to create better conditions for the regeneration of natural habitats, while protecting trees and protected species.

Camilleri said the completed project would contribute to better rainwater management and reduce the risk of flooding, while strengthening the ecological and landscape value of Mġarr ix-Xini Valley.
