Major €9 Million Investment To Strengthen Malta’s Natura 200 Network

A €9 million investment aimed at strengthening biodiversity protection, restoring habitats and improving sustainable visitor management across Malta’s Natura 2000 network has been launched through Project E-CORE.

The Environmental Connectivity for Optimised Resiliency and Ecosystem Management in Natura 2000 Sites project was launched by Minister for Energy, the Environment and the Regeneration of the Grand Harbour Miriam Dalli and Minister for European Funds, Social Dialogue and Consumer Protection Keith Azzopardi Tanti, together with Ambjent Malta and the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA).

Co-financed through European Union and national funds, Project E-CORE will focus on protecting important habitats while improving public access and encouraging greater appreciation of Malta’s natural heritage. The project includes interventions related to habitat restoration, invasive species control, environmental monitoring and wildlife conservation.

Minister Miriam Dalli said the initiative represents a significant long-term investment in ecological restoration and environmental protection, while ensuring that future generations can continue to benefit from Malta’s unique natural environment.

Minister Keith Azzopardi Tanti highlighted the importance of collaboration between different government entities, noting that European funds are being used to support projects that will benefit both current and future generations.

The project will also introduce new educational and visitor facilities, including the transformation of the former Marfa Radar Station into a Natura 2000 and Nocturnal Fauna Interpretation Centre, as well as the development of a Buskett Water Heritage Trail.

Ambjent Malta and ERA said the project marks a shift towards active ecosystem management, combining scientific knowledge with practical conservation measures.

Through improved infrastructure, awareness campaigns and training opportunities, Project E-CORE aims to strengthen the protection of Malta’s protected areas while helping the public better understand the importance of conserving biodiversity.
