An extensive maintenance and safety enhancement project has been inaugurated at the headquarters of the San Ġużepp Musical Society in Kalkara.

The project, which was largely financed through funding from the Cottonera Foundation, addressed several essential interventions aimed at eliminating water infiltration problems, improving safety standards, and preserving the building for future generations.

The project was inaugurated during the week in which Kalkara is celebrating the feast of its patron saint, St Joseph. The inauguration was attended by the Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, together with the Chairperson of the Cottonera Foundation, Joe Mizzi, and the President of the San Ġużepp Musical Society, Josef Vella.

Minister Alison Zerafa Civelli stated that the Government will continue investing in projects that strengthen the infrastructure of voluntary organisations while safeguarding local heritage. She stated that "When we invest in band clubs and musical societies, we are investing in the very heart of our communities and in the voluntary work that keeps alive the traditions and identity of our towns and villages."

She added that this project is a clear example of how collaboration between the Government, the Cottonera Foundation, and voluntary organisations delivers tangible results that benefit the entire community.

For his part, the Chairperson of the Cottonera Foundation, Joe Mizzi, said that the Foundation remains committed to supporting projects that strengthen the infrastructure of voluntary organisations and preserve local heritage.

He emphasised that investments such as this not only improve the facilities of these organisations but also reinforce their role as centres of community and cultural life throughout the Cottonera region.

The President of the San Ġużepp Musical Society, Josef Vella, explained that the project involved extensive works on the roof of the society's headquarters. These interventions had become necessary after previous works carried out over the years had failed to resolve the water infiltration problems permanently. The project included the removal of the existing roof surface, the application of a new waterproof membrane, and the installation of new floor tiles, making the roof more durable and better suited for use.

The project also included measures to improve the safety and functionality of the roof, including a new electrical installation, permanent lighting, and the installation of a handrail along the staircase. Maintenance works were also carried out on the building's structural supports and within the stairwell to eliminate water ingress and repair damage caused by dampness.

Part of the work, including the installation of the electrical system on the roof, was carried out voluntarily by members of the San Ġużepp Musical Society, demonstrating their ongoing commitment to preserving and enhancing the society's premises for the benefit of the Kalkara community.
