Madliena Woodland Given Protected Status After 1,000 New Trees Planted

The woodland surrounding historic Fort Madliena has officially been designated as a Tree Protection Area (TPA), granting it stronger legal protection while marking another step towards Malta’s biodiversity goals.

The protected site, managed by the Swieqi Local Council, has also seen around 1,000 additional trees planted following afforestation funding provided through the Environment and Resources Authority’s (ERA) Environment Fund.

The designation means the woodland now joins 60 Tree Protection Areas across Malta, Gozo and Comino, safeguarding it from activities that could harm its growing ecosystem.

Speaking during the announcement, Environment Minister Miriam Dalli said the protected land will continue developing into woodland for both present and future generations to enjoy.

ERA Biodiversity Manager Marie Therese Gambin highlighted the vital role trees play in regulating climate, preventing soil erosion, supporting wildlife and providing shade.

The Environment Fund has also allocated over €60,000 to regenerate Fort Madliena’s reservoir, improving water conservation, irrigation and wildfire resilience.
