On World Mental Health Day, prominent Maltese women Lydia Abela and Sarah Bajada both shared heartfelt messages urging compassion and understanding in the wake of a recent tragedy affecting a local family.

Lydia Abela, wife of Prime Minister Robert Abela, said that today was intended to focus on discussions and activities highlighting the importance of mental health. However, she reflected on the tragic news her country woke up to, describing the sorrow faced by a mother and father as “difficult to imagine.” She emphasised that behind every tragedy lies hidden pain, fatigue, and confusion, often masked behind smiles or silence. “Why shouldn’t our first thought be, ‘How can I help?’ or ‘How can I be a shoulder to lean on?’” she wrote, calling for courage, compassion, and kindness in everyday life.

Sarah Bajada, wife of Nationalist Party leader Alex Borg, elected in September 2025, also addressed the public on social media. She described the tragic news as heartbreaking, particularly from the perspective of a parent. Bajada highlighted the invisible burdens many carry and the ease with which people can judge or comment without understanding the full story. “Today, let’s pause before we type. Let’s show empathy instead of hate… Mental health isn’t just about what we feel, it’s about how we treat others too. Choose kindness. Always,” she wrote.

Both statements come on a day meant to raise awareness of mental health, and serve as reminders of the importance of compassion, support, and understanding for those facing invisible struggles in everyday life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family affected by yesterday’s tragic accident.
