The Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government, through the Lands Authority, has launched a new scheme to lower annual rents for voluntary organisations and trade unions operating from government-owned properties. The initiative reflects the Government’s commitment to supporting organisations that contribute significantly to Maltese society.

The scheme introduces fairer, more sustainable rent rates based on property size, easing financial pressure on entities that often operate with limited resources but deliver strong social impact. Minister Owen Bonnici emphasised that voluntary organisations and trade unions are vital pillars of society, providing essential services, strengthening communities, and giving a voice to those in need. He described the scheme as both a financial measure and a clear investment in their continued growth and impact.

The new rates are:

  • 0–150 m²: €1.50/m² (max €200/year)
  • 151–1,500 m²: €1.00/m² (max €750/year, min €200)
  • 1,501+ m²: €0.50/m² (max €2,000/year, min €750)

Eligible organisations must have no outstanding arrears and be officially recognised, tenants or title holders. Existing leases with lower rates will remain unchanged, and all future allocations will follow this scheme.

Overall, the initiative aims to reduce financial and administrative burdens, enabling organisations to focus their resources on benefiting the community and building a more inclusive, sustainable society.
