A recent survey by the National Statistics Office (NSO) Malta reveals that Maltese travellers increasingly prefer low-cost airlines over traditional full-service carriers.

The number of passengers flying with budget airlines has risen steadily each year since 2023. In 2023, 118,895 Maltese travellers opted for low-cost carriers, increasing to 133,811 in 2024, and reaching 163,273 in 2025, a notable 13.8% rise between 2024 and 2025.

In contrast, the number of travellers using high-end or more luxurious airlines showed smaller fluctuations. In 2023, 87,321 passengers flew with full-service carriers, which dipped to 77,207 in 2024 before rising slightly to 87,883 in 2025.

The data highlights a clear trend: affordability and cost-effectiveness are driving travel choices among the Maltese population, with low-cost airlines continuing to dominate as the preferred mode of air travel.
