Lost Temples and Stone Mysteries: Malta’s Prehistoric Secrets

Let’s hop into our time-travelling submarine (in our imaginations) and dive into the incredible world of Malta’s prehistoric stone mysteries—where giant temples, sunshine alignments and ancient crafts come to life!
Temples Older Than the Pyramids
Imagine places made by people 5,500 to 6,000 years ago—that’s even before the pyramids in Egypt! These are the megalithic temples of Malta, including famous ones called Ġgantija, Ħaġar Qim, Mnajdra, Tarxien, Ta’ Ħaġrat, and Skorba. They are so important that UNESCO named them World Heritage Sites.Giant Stones and Mysterious Builders
The Ġgantija temples on the small island of Gozo are super old—built between 3600 and 3200 BC, and even older than Stonehenge. Ancient folklore says giants built them—hence the name Ggantija, meaning “place of giants”!
At Ħaġar Qim on mainland Malta, there’s a massive stone that weighs around 57 tonnes—that’s heavier than a double-decker bus!
Temples Aligned with the Sun
Mnajdra is more than stones—it’s a clever sky clock! On special days like the equinoxes, sunlight passes through its entrance just right to light up parts of the temple—like an ancient calendar showing when planting time begins.
No People Inside, Just Rituals
These temples were not used for graves—hardly any human bones were found inside! Instead, archaeologists found animal bones, flint tools and tiny statues, suggesting Malta’s ancient people used these temples for ceremonies, healing, or asking for lucky rain and good harvests.
Long-Lasting Stone Masters
These incredible structures were built in several stages between 3600 and 2500 BC, showing how Malta’s temple-building skills grew over time into artistic and architectural masterpieces!
