“Long-Term Sustainability Depends On Good Governance,” Says PM Robert Abela

Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Robert Abela has said that the key choices facing Malta in the coming months will centre on economic and financial management to ensure energy subsidies remain sustainable for families and businesses.
Speaking in an interview with Manuel Micallef on ONE, Dr Abela pointed to recent discussions at a European leaders’ summit in Cyprus, where concern was expressed over geopolitical pressures affecting several countries.
He noted that Malta’s ability to maintain stable energy prices had drawn positive reactions from other leaders.
Abela insisted the country’s strong finances allow continued subsidies, but stressed long-term sustainability depends on prudent governance.
Citing projections by the International Monetary Fund, he said Malta’s economy is expected to remain among the strongest until 2030, provided competent leadership is maintained.
He also highlighted a number of ongoing infrastructure and healthcare projects, including a new intermediate care hospital, a mental health facility and an expanded emergency department aimed at improving patient services.
The Prime Minister also referred to road upgrades and the proposed long-term “Malta in Motion” mass transport plan, which will integrate rail, bus and sea links over the next 15 years.
He added that wage growth remains a priority, noting nearly 140 collective agreements in recent years are set to deliver around €2 billion in increased salaries and allowances for thousands of workers across various sectors.
