Long-Term Energy Strategy Unveiled By PM Robert Abela And Minister Miriam Dalli

Environment Minister Miriam Dalli has proposed the construction of a third interconnector between Malta and Sicily, in addition to the fully functioning IC and the second interconnector that is currently being constructed.

This IC3 will offer a different connection and voltage level than the other interconnectors, and hence, offers a diverse source of transmission.

Tenders for the third interconnecter shall be published in the coming weeks.

The Government will also continue to offer incentives to encourage households to invest in renewable technologies, including a scheme enabling families without roof space to benefit from solar panels.

Officials said the plan aligns with Malta’s 2050 vision and wider European climate targets, while ensuring energy price stability and protecting both households and businesses during the transition.

The possibility for an interconnector between Malta and Africa is also being explored, explained Minister Dalli, a country which has high amounts of both solar and wind energy.

The plan is open for public consultation for the next 4 weeks.
