Long Queues and Ferry Delays Cause Headaches for Gozo Commuters

Long queues formed yesterday as traffic built up once again for the Gozo Ferry, causing significant delays for drivers heading to and from the terminal. The Fast Ferry service was suspended due to strong winds, while Gozo Channel ferries were forced to operate via the Kemmuna route, further slowing the flow of passengers.
Minister for Gozo and Planning, Clint Camilleri, addressed the situation, noting that “Thousands of Maltese and tourists are returning to Malta tonight. Thanks to the efforts of the Police, Transport Malta, and Gozo Channel staff, everyone is being assisted to reach their destinations safely and as quickly as possible. We are in constant contact with the authorities to ensure the situation progresses in the best possible way.”
However, Gozitan Nationalist candidate Beppe Galea criticised the handling of the service, calling it “absurd that at a time when Gozo welcomes so many visitors, accessibility measures fail. Natural disruptions are understandable, but repeated failures month after month with no accountability are disrespectful to passengers and Gozitans alike. Ferries designed for 900 people are operating at a 500-passenger limit due to understaffing, leaving many stranded in long queues. This is not quality tourism, nor does it prioritise Gozo, it is a result of incompetent leadership and mismanagement.”
Galea called for serious, practical, and temporary measures to ensure that Fast Ferry users can travel safely and comfortably despite adverse conditions.
