Members of the Committee Against Bird Slaughter (CABS) have reported multiple cases of illegal bird trapping across Malta and Gozo over the past 10 days, alongside one incident described as particularly severe animal cruelty.

According to the group, 11 trappers were caught in Malta by the Environmental Protection Unit, while two others were apprehended in Gozo.

Authorities confiscated 20 clap nets and a total of 59 birds, including 56 that were found alive. These birds, mainly finch species, were taken to a government veterinarian and are expected to be released.

CABS also published footage of a man in Gozo capturing and killing a Kestrel, a protected species under Maltese law. The video shows the bird being crushed and discarded, as well as attempts to hide equipment when police approached. The case is likely to result in significant penalties if proven in court.

Kestrels are listed under the highest level of legal protection, having previously disappeared from the islands before a gradual return in recent years.

CABS has welcomed police action but criticised what it described as long-standing inaction by authorities regarding illegal trapping and wildlife crime.

The group is calling for stricter enforcement and an end to trapping derogations, and says its teams will remain active until the migration season ends in May.
