Local Parks Spotlight: Ġnien Carmelo Dimech, Mosta

Ġnien Carmelo Dimech is one of several projects completed by the Ministry for the Environment through Ambjent Malta.
The garden, which was already used as an open space, was upgraded and transformed into a public creative area with improved environmental features.
A water reservoir with a capacity of more than 100 cubic metres has been installed to collect stormwater. Several water sustainability measures were also introduced to reduce waste and improve resource management.

These include drip irrigation, mulching, and the planting of drought-tolerant plants. These techniques help conserve water, prevent soil erosion, and support better water quality.
The site also includes a photovoltaic solar paving system that generates more than 3kW of solar energy for the grid. The system also powers water pumps for irrigation and lighting within the garden.
A playground feature, including a spring rider, has been added to the open space. The equipment produces kinetic energy through children’s movement while playing, which can contribute to renewable energy generation.
Further improvements include printed concrete pathways in a natural sand colour, smart benches, garden furniture, standard bins and a smart recycling bin.

Additional facilities such as lighting, railings, drinking fountains, Wi Fi and a CCTV system have also been installed.
Several trees, shrubs and seasonal plants were planted, and the garden will remain open to the public at all times.
