Taking to social media, the official Facebook page of the Knisja ta’ Ġieżu of the Franciscans thanked the local Indian community who were present and noticed that flooding was taking place.

They tried to help, the church social media said, but the task was too big for them to manage on their own.

The church noted later how the damage was caused due to an external object ending up in the drainage channels, creating a blockage.

‘The shifting of the ground caused all this water to enter the Church. Once the blockage was cleared, the inflow of water stopped immediately.’

The church has been the subject of extensive restoration works. Had these not been done, the damage would have led to an even bigger disaster yesterday, the church said.

‘We would like to reassure everyone that this was not a maintenance issue, nor the result of a lack of further works, but rather a set of circumstances that occurred unexpectedly.’
