Local Councils Approve Reform Proposals At Annual Plenary

The Local Councils' Association brought together mayors, regional presidents and local councillors from Malta and Gozo for its annual plenary, held under the theme "Reshape, Restructure, Realign".
During the event, participants discussed and approved a series of proposals aimed at strengthening local government, with a particular focus on initiatives that can be implemented directly by local councils.
The proposals emerged from five thematic workshops covering training and capacity building, transparency, resident participation, data-driven decision-making and digital integration, all aimed at creating a more modern, efficient and resident-centred local government system.
Minister for Local Government and Public Works, Alison Zerafa Civelli, said communities continue to evolve, making it essential for local government to adapt accordingly.
She reaffirmed the Government's commitment to equipping councils with the resources, technology and support needed to serve residents more effectively.
Local Councils' Association President Mario Fava said the approved proposals demonstrate a commitment to turning ideas into action, stressing that "Residents First" will remain the guiding principle for the future of local government in Malta and Gozo.
