Local

Local photographer Redeemer Saliba captured a striking photo of isolated thunderstorms developing over Malta last night, including some identified as supercells.

Supercells are powerful thunderstorms characterised by a rotating column of rising warm, moist air, known as a mesocyclone. While relatively isolated, they can produce intense rainfall, strong winds, large hail and, in some cases, tornadoes.

Although more common in the central United States, supercells can also occur across Europe and the Mediterranean.

Not every supercell produces a tornado, but these storms can last for several hours and bring severe weather conditions.
