Malta’s coffee scene has experienced a major milestone as a local barista prepares to represent the island on the international stage. For the first time ever, Malta hosted its very own national barista competition on November 19th, shining a spotlight on the incredible talent emerging from within the local coffee community.

The event celebrated the artistry, creativity and precision behind great coffee-making, giving local baristas a platform to showcase their skills to a wider audience. The winner will go on to represent Malta at the International Barista Competition in Turin in March 2026, competing against top baristas from around the globe for the prestigious title of International Barista Champion.

This landmark event also welcomes an esteemed panel of judges: Marvin Gauci, Ambassador of Gastronomy, chef and restaurateur; Hezron Muscat, founder of Tonic and Berry Ltd and co-owner of Thyme Gourmet Street Food; and Darjan Mitrevski, certified coffee roaster and Malta Aeropress Championship 2019 runner-up.

Organisers have stated that this marks the beginning of Malta’s journey onto the world coffee stage, a step that highlights the island’s growing passion and professionalism in the craft. Earlier this year, Malta also saw the launch of a dedicated Training Centre, focused on nurturing and developing local talent.

A major moment for Malta… and an even bigger one for its coffee lovers.
