A touching and spontaneous moment took place during a pastoral visit by Pope Leo XIV to the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Rome, when a young Maltese boy approached the Pope and handed him a Maltese flag.

The boy, identified as Gianluca Caruana, the son of Henri and Mariella Caruana, approached the Pope during a meeting with families and children at the parish. With enthusiasm, he presented the red and white Maltese flag to the Head of the Catholic Church in a moment that quickly captured attention.

The heartwarming scene was photographed and later shared on the Pope’s official social media channels. The accompanying caption read: “No matter how deep the abyss into which a person may fall because of their sins, Christ comes to bring a brighter light, capable of freeing them from the blindness of evil, so that they may begin a new life.”

The parish where the visit took place is administered by Gozitan priest Fr Franz Refalo and is known for its pastoral work with families and young people in the area.

The image has since resonated with followers around the world, highlighting the Pope’s message of hope, redemption, and the enduring power of faith. The sight of the Maltese flag in such a moment served as a reminder of Malta’s strong Catholic heritage and the meaningful connections faith can inspire.

This simple yet powerful encounter between the Pope and the young Maltese boy has touched many hearts, illustrating how small gestures can carry deep symbolic meaning and bring communities closer together
