Despite being a natural part of life, periods are still surrounded by stigma. The silence around menstruation affects every woman, especially young girls.

Many often feel embarrassed to talk about their cycles, hide pads or tampons, or avoid mentioning cramps at school or work. Studies even show that some students even miss school days because of their period.

For some, the stigma has deeper and more serious effects. Menstruation-related conditions like endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) are common, yet still heavily under-diagnosed.

Endometriosis can cause severe pain and infertility, while PCOS can lead to irregular periods, hormonal imbalances, and difficulty conceiving. Too often, those who suffer are told their pain is normal, or stay silent out of shame, delaying diagnosis and care for years.

That’s why breaking the silence matters. Open conversations, proper menstrual education, and supportive healthcare are key to normalising everyone’s experience of menstruation; from mild discomfort to chronic conditions.

No one should feel ashamed of a completely natural process their body goes through.

Malta’s End the Stigma. Period! initiative is helping lead that change.

Over 50 secondary schools across Malta and Gozo are now being equipped with free period product machines, giving around 11,000 students easy access to what they need.

Announced by Rebecca Buttigieg, Parliamentary Secretary for Equality and Reforms, the €500,000 project challenges outdated taboos, reduces school absences, supports families, and promotes health, equality, and dignity for all.
