Andy Ellul, The Parliamentary Secretary for Social Dialogue, has revealed the first details of a new special leave scheme for parents whose babies are admitted to hospital in the intensive care unit.

Announced at the opening of a national conference on parental support leave, the initiative aims to provide crucial time for families during a deeply stressful period to be with their baby.

Once in force, the leave will be available not only to mothers but also to their partners, including same-sex couples.

Speaking at the conference, Dr Ellul emphasised that the scheme would not create an undue burden on employers, but is essential for advancing family rights in Malta.

For our country to move forward in terms of rights for families, it is necessary for everyone to pull a rope, he said.

Dr Ellul explained that internal consultations highlighted the medical and emotional benefits of parental presence in intensive care, noting that babies recover more quickly when parents can spend time with them.

He also stressed the financial relief this leave will provide, helping families manage the often unexpected costs associated with intensive care admissions.

The conference featured interventions from parents who had experienced this situation first-hand, all underlining the importance of support during such a delicate time.

This event marks the beginning of a national discussion on parental support leave, with further consultations planned to involve all stakeholders. As Dr Ellul concluded, the goal is to draft a law that truly makes a difference in the lives of families, reflecting a collective effort by society.
