Local

Minister Anton Refalo, together with Parliamentary Secretary Alicia Bugeja Said, visited the Fisheries Hub project in Marsa, marking the completion of the building’s construction following an investment of around €1.2 million. The project will now enter its second phase, with a further €2.2 million allocated to finishing works after the conclusion of a public tender process.

The four storey facility is designed to host the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture and will be equipped with modern infrastructure and technological systems. These are intended to improve efficiency and better support the needs of both the department and the local fishing sector. The hub forms part of a broader government strategy to strengthen investment in fisheries and modernise the sector.

The development also contributes to a wider vision focused on improving working conditions, enhancing sustainability and supporting the regeneration of Marsa. The second phase will include internal and external finishing works such as plastering, painting, tiling, installation of water and electrical systems, air conditioning and apertures, bringing the building closer to full completion.

Minister Refalo stated that the project is progressing steadily and is expected to meet high quality standards. He noted that the hub will also support economic activity linked to fishing while contributing to the regeneration of the Grand Harbour area.

Parliamentary Secretary Bugeja Said said the project represents an investment in fishermen, workers and the wider community, aimed at delivering more efficient services and strengthening the long term sustainability of the sector.
