The Labour Party has strongly criticised Opposition Leader Alex Borg following his response to Budget 2027 on Monday evening, accusing him of delivering a negative speech filled with inaccurate claims.

In a statement issued shortly after Borg’s two-hour parliamentary speech, the PL argued that the PN Leader had failed to present a clear alternative vision for the country.

According to Labour, the speech lacked substance and included several claims which the party said it had already challenged earlier in the day, following alleged leaks from within the Opposition.

Labour also criticised Borg for failing to mention the Government’s energy subsidies, which it said continue to protect Maltese and Gozitan families and businesses from higher energy costs.

The party further claimed that the only addition Borg made following the alleged leaks was his commitment to retain the €1,000 Super Bonus introduced by the Labour Government.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media following Borg’s speech, Prime Minister Robert Abela also criticised the Opposition Leader.

Abela described Borg as an Opposition Leader who avoids taking clear positions, accusing him of trying to be populist by keeping “one foot on each side” of political debates.

The Prime Minister argued that Borg had said nothing of substance throughout his two-hour Budget speech, claiming this reflected a continued lack of vision and direction.

Looking ahead, Abela said the Government would remain focused on delivering the electoral manifesto it promised voters during this year’s general election.

He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to its Vision 2050 strategy, saying it would continue making decisions in the best interests of workers, pensioners, students and Maltese families.
