Labour Responds to Nationalist Criticism Over Gozo Transport Disruptions

The Ministry for Gozo and Planning has categorically rejected the “unfounded and political” allegations from the Nationalist Party, insisting that the government’s work is driving both economic and social growth on the island.
The PN had criticised the government over disruptions at the Gozo Channel, claiming that the chaos at the Mgarr Harbour was the result of Minister Clint Camilleri’s incompetence, mismanagement, and poor planning. They alleged that many vessels were operating at only half capacity because insufficient staff had been allocated to shifts, leaving passengers stranded and causing significant delays. The party accused the Minister of trying to downplay the issue, blaming adverse weather instead, and described the handling of the situation as “an insult to the intelligence of the public.”
In its reply, the Ministry highlighted that recent figures demonstrate the success of investment and planning initiatives. Tourist numbers in Gozo have reached record levels, with the Gozo Channel ferry service experiencing consistent growth. In 2025, the Fast Ferry transported over 1.2 million passengers, an increase of 258,000 compared to 2024, highlighting the improved connectivity between Malta and Gozo. The Ministry emphasised that the government worked with operators to adjust timetables to meet demand — a practice absent under previous Nationalist administrations.
