In what quickly became a high-stakes show of force between Malta’s two main political parties, both the Labour Party (PL) and the Nationalist Party (PN) held aggressive fundraising marathons on Sunday 14 December, each vying to demonstrate broader public backing and financial strength.

According to official figures released by the parties and reported by MaltaDaily, the Labour Party raised a commanding €1,130,016 during its 12-hour telethon, marking the largest total ever collected by the party in a December fundraiser.

The final figure was announced by Labour’s Chief Executive Leonid McKay alongside Prime Minister and party leader Robert Abela, who was present throughout the event.

In contrast, the Nationalist Party reported raising €730,384 in its own marathon, held simultaneously. This figure also represents a record amount for a December fundraising event for the PN, underscoring what party leaders described as a resurgence of supporter engagement under the leadership of Alex Borg.

Although both campaigns achieved significant financial success, Labour clearly outpaced its rival by nearly €400,000, demonstrating a stronger ability to mobilise donors and maintain broad grassroots or organised support.

For Labour, crossing the €1 million mark for the second fundraiser of the year reinforced the party’s message of strength and continuity.

Party officials highlighted the fundraiser as a sign of confidence in the government’s policies and its relevance to ordinary citizens, especially during a time of economic uncertainty.

Meanwhile, the PN framed its strong performance as evidence of a revitalised base under Alex Borg’s leadership, and a sign that its message resonates with an engaged segment of the electorate.

Raising over €730,000, particularly in a traditionally slower fundraising month, was portrayed as a morale-boosting outcome and a solid financial springboard heading into future political battles.

Taken together, the two parties collected nearly €1.86 million in public donations during one Sunday.
