The Labour Party has proposed creating more daily Maltese-language content for children as part of a wider plan to strengthen and modernise the Maltese language.

The proposals were announced yesterday evening as part of Labour’s approved electoral manifesto ahead of the next general election taking place on 30th May.

Among the plans revealed is a commitment to continue investing in Maltese cartoons, games, films and television reading programmes for children aged between three and eleven. Labour also said it wants to create more Maltese audiovisual productions for children, including daily television programmes and online content accessible through the internet.

The manifesto also includes proposals for the National Council for the Maltese Language to take a more active role in promoting the use of Maltese across the country.

Labour is proposing free translation and terminology services for private businesses that want to introduce bilingual Maltese and English signs in workplaces and shops. The aim is to encourage more everyday use of Maltese in public spaces and businesses.

The party also revealed plans for new digital Maltese-language tools. Labour said it is already working with Microsoft on localised Maltese datasets to improve speech-to-text technology in Maltese. It also wants to develop Maltese text-to-speech systems and a Maltese-language “reader pen” designed to help students with dyslexia read more easily.

Another proposal focuses on the restoration of Ville Frere in Pietà. Labour said part of the historic property, once used by Mikiel Anton Vassalli, widely regarded as the father of the Maltese language, would become a dedicated home of the Maltese language for the community to enjoy.

The proposals form part of Labour’s wider vision to protect, modernise and promote the Maltese language through technology, education and media.
