Labour Propose Carers Grant For Parents Of Disabled Children To Increase As Much As Minimum Wage Pay

The Labour Party has unveiled two new measures aimed at providing greater support to parents of children with disabilities, as part of its proposals ahead of the general election.

Under the plan, parents will continue to be taxed at the favourable parental rate until their child reaches the age of 23.

In cases involving severe disability, this benefit will remain in place for as long as the parent continues to care for the child.

The party also pledged to strengthen financial assistance through the carers’ grant.

In recent years, this grant was increased from €500 to half the minimum wage. The new proposal would see it doubled further, making it equivalent to the full minimum wage.

The measures are intended to ease financial pressures on families where parents are often unable to work due to caregiving responsibilities, while recognising the long-term commitment required in such circumstances.
