Labour PMs Attend Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici Monument Reveal

A monument dedicated to former Prime Minister Karmenu Mifsud Bonnici was inaugurated at Castille Square in Valletta.
The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Robert Abela, who described Mifsud Bonnici as a lawyer and politician committed to social justice, integrity and humility.
Abela said the former Prime Minister’s dedication to public service and his accessibility to people were among his defining qualities.
The bronze monument, designed by Maltese artist Manuel Farrugia, stands on a pedestal made of Maltese hardstone. It was produced in Italy through collaboration between Heritage Malta and the Ministry for Culture, Lands and Local Government, under the Office of the Prime Minister.
During his address, Abela referred to Mifsud Bonnici’s contribution to Maltese politics, particularly his role in establishing the principle of neutrality within the Constitution.
He said this reform, together with others made during Mifsud Bonnici’s time in office, strengthened democracy and stability in the country.
Culture Minister Owen Bonnici said Mifsud Bonnici was consistent in his principles and remained committed to supporting workers.
He added that as a lawyer and academic, Mifsud Bonnici often helped those in need and shared his income with struggling students.
Heritage Malta Chairman Mario Cutajar said the monument aims to recognise both Mifsud Bonnici’s personal qualities and his contribution to Malta’s political and social development.
Also present at the ceremony were former Prime Ministers Joseph Muscat and Alfred Sant, President Emeritus Marie Louise Coleiro Preca, Speaker Anġlu Farrugia, and Opposition Leader Alex Borg.
