Labour Party To Host Council Of Socialist International

Pedro Sanchez, the President of Socialist International and Prime Minister of Spain, will lead a series of meetings involving left wing parties from around 100 countries during an upcoming gathering in Malta.
The Labour Party will host the Council of Socialist International between Thursday 27 and Sunday 30 November, with the sessions taking place at a major hotel in St Julian’s.
Socialist International brings together social democratic and labour parties from across the globe, representing 130 member parties from more than 100 countries.
Speaking at a press conference, Labour Party Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba said that the decision by Socialist International to hold the Council in Malta reflects a strong degree of trust in the Labour Party.
He noted that this is the first time a Maltese political party has hosted an event of this level, which will welcome delegates from left wing parties worldwide. According to Agius Saliba, the choice also signals recognition of the Labour Party’s work in Government at national, European and international levels.
Agius Saliba added that the meeting will allow the Labour Party to share Malta’s progress in sectors such as the economy, inclusion, equality, civil rights, innovation and diplomacy.
He said that discussions with visiting dignitaries would focus on the party’s future direction in Government and on a vision that measures national success through both economic performance and the overall quality of life.
Labour Party International Secretary John Grech said that the chosen theme for the event, Leading Together, highlights the importance of cooperation between left wing parties in addressing global issues relating to governance, peace and social justice.
He outlined the full programme of meetings, which will also include the Presidium, the Socialist International Women’s Council and the Mediterranean Committee.
Grech added that the main sessions on Saturday and Sunday will feature addresses from Pedro Sanchez, Prime Minister Robert Abela, Deputy Prime Minister Ian Borg, Deputy Leader Alex Agius Saliba and Socialist International Secretary General Chantal Kambiwa.
A prestigious honour will also be presented to recognise the contributions of selected member parties.
