Labour to Hold Casual Election to Fill Carmelo Abela’s Vacant Seat

Malta Daily can confirm that the Labour party will be heading for a casual election to replace elected MP Carmelo Abela, who was chosen to become Speaker of the House of Representatives.
The contest will determine who fills the vacant seat in the Third District and will feature four eligible candidates: former MP Ray Abela, former Bank of Valletta director James Grech, Martina Buhagiar, and Eric Plumpton.
The successful candidate will take Carmelo Abela’s place in Parliament, earning a second opportunity to secure a seat following the general election. The casual election follows the established process of filling parliamentary vacancies by considering the strongest unelected candidates from the relevant district.
