LABOUR PARTY PROPOSES EXPANSION OF ACTIVE AGEING CENTRES IN GENERAL ELECTION PROGRAMME

The Labour Party has proposed a major expansion of Active Ageing Centres as part of its general election programme, with the aim of strengthening services for elderly people across Malta and Gozo.
Under the proposal, Active Ageing Centres would be further developed to ensure that older people have more opportunities to remain physically, mentally and socially active. The centres currently operate through collaboration between local councils and the Active Ageing Department, with several localities already managing their own facilities.
If implemented, the plan would see increased investment in the sector, with the party pledging to extend the opening days of existing centres, diversify the activities offered, and establish additional centres in more localities nationwide.
The initiative is intended to broaden access to community-based services for elderly citizens and encourage greater participation in structured programmes that promote wellbeing and social inclusion.
According to the proposal, the expansion would form part of a wider strategy focused on improving quality of life for older persons and strengthening support systems that help reduce isolation among ageing populations.
The Labour Party said the measure reflects its commitment to active ageing policies and its intention to continue investing in services that support healthier and more engaged lifestyles for elderly citizens in the years ahead.
