Labour Party Opens General Conference: Hold Vote For National Executive

The first session of the Labour Party’s General Conference was held on Friday evening, concluding with speeches by Deputy Prime Minister and Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs Ian Borg and Deputy Leader for Party Affairs Alex Agius Saliba.
Addressing party delegates, Borg said that while Malta is experiencing confidence in its future, international geopolitical challenges can create uncertainty. He stressed that raising these issues was not intended to discourage people but reflected the Government’s awareness of global realities and its commitment to protecting the public.
Borg said the Labour Party must remain humble and responsive to the challenges faced by families and communities. He said the party’s credibility depends on delivering its electoral manifesto throughout the legislature, adding that previous economic achievements had strengthened investor confidence in Malta.
On healthcare, the Deputy Prime Minister highlighted ongoing projects and new services aimed at strengthening the sector. He referred to the construction of a psychiatric centre at Mater Dei Hospital, the extension of the Emergency Department, the strengthening of private family doctor services, and the completion of works on the hospital’s helipad. He also spoke about changes to IVF legislation, saying further reforms must continue despite the work already carried out.
Agius Saliba thanked Labour Party activists and said the movement must remain open to people’s ideas and concerns. He described the party as one that, after securing a fourth consecutive electoral victory, must continue listening to the public and working towards improving people’s quality of life.
He contrasted the Government’s first 100 days with what he described as an Opposition focused on partisan politics. He said the Labour Party must continue drawing its strength from the people and remain close to families through its activists and local branches.
The first session ended with voting opening for the election of the National Executive, with 32 candidates contesting 12 positions. The General Conference will conclude on Sunday with an address by Prime Minister and Labour Leader Robert Abela.
