LABOUR PARTY IN FAVOUR OF PUBLISHING MPs’ ASSET DECLARATIONS

The Labour Party has expressed its support for the publication of asset declarations of all Members of Parliament, reinforcing its position on transparency and accountability.

The party noted the stance taken by the Labour Parliamentary Group, as presented by Government members during a meeting of the Standing Committee on Standards in Public Life held earlier on Monday.

During the session, Government representatives backed a proposal put forward by Speaker of the House, Anġlu Farrugia, who also chairs the committee. The proposal aims to provide easier access for both the public and the media to MPs’ declarations of assets.

In line with this, the Government proposed that the register of assets for all Members of Parliament be formally laid on the Table of the House and published.

The Labour Party described the move as another important reform intended to strengthen accountability and transparency within the country’s highest institutions. It noted that similar reforms have already been implemented in sectors such as justice and governance.

The committee unanimously agreed that the proposed amendments should proceed to the next stage of the parliamentary process, where they will be debated in plenary.
