Labour Party Commemorates Dom Mintoff On 110th Anniversary Of His Birth

The Labour Party marked the 110th anniversary of the birth of former Prime Minister and former Labour Party Leader Dom Mintoff with a commemorative ceremony in Cospicua.

Prime Minister and Labour Party Leader Robert Abela, accompanied by members of the party's administration, paid tribute to Mintoff by laying flowers at his monument.

Mintoff joined the Labour Party in 1947 and was elected party leader two years later, serving in the role until 1984. He was Prime Minister from 1955 to 1958 and again between 1971 and 1984, overseeing a period of major change in Malta.

During his years in office, Malta became a republic and celebrated the first Freedom Day following the departure of British military forces.

His governments also introduced reforms that contributed to the development of the country's welfare state, with a strong emphasis on social justice, solidarity and expanding opportunities for Maltese and Gozitan families.

In a statement issued to mark the anniversary, the Labour Party described Mintoff as a central figure in Malta's modern history and reaffirmed its commitment to the principles that defined his political legacy.

The party said it remains committed to protecting and strengthening the values of progress, equality and social justice, which it described as being at the heart of Dom Mintoff's lifelong contribution to Malta.
