The Labour Party is marking 13 years in government, following its historic victory in the 2013 general election held on the 9th of March.

That election saw Joseph Muscat sworn in as Prime Minister after leading Labour to a 35,000-vote margin over the Nationalist Party.

Labour would go on to maintain its parliamentary majority, defeating a Nationalist Party led by Simon Busuttil in the 2017 general election, again with a significant lead of roughly 35,000 votes.

In 2020, Robert Abela succeeded Muscat as party leader and Prime Minister, guiding Labour to another victory in the 2022 general election, this time over Bernard Grech’s Nationalist Party, with a lead of 39,000 votes.

With reports suggesting a general election could be approaching soon, questions are already being raised about whether Labour’s long-standing tenure in government will continue for the foreseeable future.

Over the past 13 years, the party has consolidated its position on the Maltese political scene, with successive electoral victories solidifying its influence and shaping the country’s direction.
