LABOUR MP EDWARD ZAMMIT LEWIS TO NOT CONTEST GENERAL ELECTION

Edward Zammit Lewis will not be contesting the upcoming general election, bringing to a close a political career spanning almost three decades within the Labour Party. He has said he intends to return to his legal profession, while still pledging continued support and loyalty to the party.
First elected to Parliament in 2013, Zammit Lewis had previously served as a Labour councillor in Attard and president of the Labour youth forum Forum Żgħażagħ Laburisti. He was appointed parliamentary secretary shortly after his election by then-prime minister Joseph Muscat, later becoming Tourism Minister, a position he held until 2017.
After a short period on the backbenches, he returned to cabinet in 2019 as Equality Minister and subsequently served as Justice Minister, where he oversaw rule of law reforms linked to recommendations by the Venice Commission. Following Labour’s 2022 electoral victory, however, he was not reappointed to cabinet and remained a backbench MP.
His departure adds to a growing list of MPs who will not be seeking re-election, reflecting wider political turnover ahead of the next general election. Zammit Lewis described his time in politics as both demanding and rewarding, highlighting service, reform, and public engagement as central to his career.
