Labour Accuses Alex Borg Of Changing Position On 4 Day Work Week

The Labour Party has issued a statement criticising Alex Borg for what it describes as inconsistent and opportunistic positions, arguing that he “adopts a different stance depending on his audience”.
According to the Labour Party, this behaviour confirms what the public has “long recognised”, namely that Borg “says whatever suits the moment to please his audience, rather than acting on clear principles”.
The statement refers specifically to Borg’s remarks at an employers’ conference, where he said that a four-day working week “cannot be for everyone” and must be linked to “productivity”.
The Labour Party says this position effectively excludes workers in time-based and service roles, including essential sectors, where productivity “cannot always be measured straightforwardly”. It argues that Borg’s claims show “a clear misunderstanding of how different sectors and the labour market function”.
The Labour Party also highlights what it calls a contradiction in Borg’s rhetoric, noting that he now claims international experiences “do not necessarily apply to Malta” while warning of an “economic disaster”, despite previously presenting himself as supportive of progressive reforms.
The statement stresses that “serious policymaking must be inclusive and fair”, not driven by “shifting slogans”.
The Labour Party says it believes discussions on work-life balance must be “grounded in evidence” and social dialogue, pointing to government measures such as minimum wage increases, parental leave and maternity leave contributions.
