Knights, Cannons and Secret Tunnels, The Untold Defences of Valletta

Let’s sneak into the exciting world of Valletta’s hidden defences, complete with brave knights, rumbling cannons and secret underground tunnels!
Built by Brave Knights to Keep Enemies Out
Valletta wasn’t just built for beauty, every wall and corner was planned to keep the city safe. Its high limestone fortifications were started in 1566 by the Knights of Malta and took shape by the 1570s. Famous landmarks like Fort St. Elmo and Fort Lascaris were key to protecting the city even through busy battlesCannons That Roared from the Walls
Perched on bastions, those cannons kept invaders at bay. One famous spot is the Saluting Battery, where cannons not only fired war signals but also noisy salutes. Today, you can still hear cannon fire at midday and 4 p.m. like a daily, ancient alarm clock
Shh… Tunnels with Hidden Secrets
Alright, whisper this quietly, but Valletta has underground tunnels! The Knights started building them during sieges, using them to safely carry water, food and soldiers beneath the surface. Sometimes enemies even broke into each other’s tunnels deep underground!
These safe, secret passageways weren’t just for wars. During World War II, when bombs rained down, many people hid in expanded shelters under the city, made from the old tunnels and cisterns, saving lives when the air above was dangerous
War Rooms Beneath the Barrakka Gardens
In the 1940s, during World War II, heroes planned important missions in secret War Rooms hidden under the Upper Barrakka Gardens. These hideaway tunnels helped guide Malta’s defences and now form part of a museum you can visit today!
