Kirkop Community Set for Major Boost with New Cultural Hub Expansion

In recent weeks, the Kirkop Pageant Group and the Kirkop Cultural Association expressed the need for a dedicated space where they can continue nurturing the talents of their members through the activities they organise, while also providing a safe and welcoming environment for young people to meet and develop new skills.

In response, the Public Works Department, in collaboration with the Parish of Ħal Kirkop, has launched a project to reconstruct, extend and embellish the Domus Curialis. The aim is to expand the building to better serve local organisations and the wider community.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) formalising this ambitious project was signed today, in the presence of the Parliamentary Secretary for Public Works, Omar Farrugia.

The project will include extensive reconstruction and extension works, notably the incorporation of an additional building located at the rear of the premises. It will also involve finishing works throughout and installing new services, maximising the use of the space for the benefit of the Ħal Kirkop community—particularly the organisations and young people who will use the facility.

During the event, Parliamentary Secretary Omar Farrugia also announced that the permit for the church parvis in Ħal Kirkop has been approved. With designs finalised, the next step will be the issuance of a public tender for works to commence.

Farrugia explained that the initiative stems from the desire of local organisations to have a central cultural space, adding that through collaboration between the Government and the Parish, the Domus will be upgraded and extended to serve the community in the best possible way. He emphasised that the project will bring together the Government, the Parish and the community, creating a space where children and young people can nurture and develop their cultural talents.

He further noted that progress on the church parvis project marks another step towards enhancing the heart of Ħal Kirkop, with all permits now approved and the tendering process set to begin shortly.

The Mayor of Ħal Kirkop, Matthew Agius Zammit, welcomed the initiative, describing it as both necessary and highly beneficial for the locality, particularly for its active organisations.

Parish Priest Fr Martin Cardona also highlighted the importance of the project, noting that the Domus serves as a central, unifying space for the community. He added that a long-abandoned property situated directly behind the Domus will now be redeveloped and integrated into the main building, significantly increasing its footprint and creating a larger, more versatile venue for community activities.
