King Charles celebrated his 77th birthday with a visit to a wet and windy south Wales, accompanied by Queen Camilla.

The royal couple toured Cyfarthfa Castle in Merthyr Tydfil, where they met local cultural figures, including BBC comedy star Ruth Jones.

At a reception, the King cut a birthday cake shaped like the 200-year-old castle and greeted crowds sheltering under umbrellas from Storm Claudia.

During the visit, King Charles spoke with members of the local community involved in arts and culture.

Ruth Jones shared details of a new TV comedy she is writing about a middle-aged couple reuniting for a second chance.

The King also met TikToker Lewis Leigh, whose parents expressed pride in their son’s achievements in cancer awareness and school engagement. Love Island star Liam Reardon joked about inviting the King to his new gym.

At Cyfarthfa Primary School, Queen Camilla listened to pupils reading poetry, while King Charles officially opened the South Wales Metro Depot in Taff’s Well and tried driving a tram-train. Head teacher Andrew Lewis said pupils were thrilled to witness the visit, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

The visit coincided with recent stormy weather and comes amid a busy autumn schedule, including a state visit by US President Donald Trump and a historic meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.
